Trump Withdraws U.S. From U.N. Arms Trade Treaty To Make NRA Happy
Trump took a disgusting action last Friday by pulling the US out of The United Nationas Arms Trade Treaty. This document is followed by nearly 100 nations to regulate the trade of weapons across sovereign borders.
Trump effectively "unsigned" an international arms sales agreement Friday, moving to withdraw the U.S. from the United Nations' Arms Trade Treaty. The agreement sets global standards for regulating transfers of conventional arms, from rifles to tanks and airplanes.
The treaty, known as the ATT, has been in effect since late 2014. The U.S. signed on to the agreement in 2013 but has not ratified the treaty.
Trump's decision was quickly criticized...."Today the President once again walked away from America's leadership role in the world and undermined international efforts to reduce human suffering caused by irresponsible and illegal arms transfers," said Stimson Managing Director Rachel Stohl, an arms trade expert who helped draft the treaty. "Unsigning the Arms Trade Treaty will undermine international peace and security, increase irresponsible and illegal sales of conventional weapons, and harm the American economy."
The NRA, a domestic terrorism organization, has been a long opposer to this Treaty.
By removing the signature of the United States from the Arms Trade Treaty, Trump joins the ranks of Russia, North Korea & Syria and again retreats from US leadership on an issue of national security and human rights - this time to placate the greed and self-interest of the @NRA. https://t.co/F90UKLE6gM
