UPDATE: DeVos Ends Program That Gave Students Debt Relief From Fraudulent For-Profit Schools

An update to our July 9, 2018 post included below.  These expected actions are now official as of July 27th.

The U.S. Education Department is proposing changes to Obama-era rules that offer debt relief for students who were defrauded by their colleges.

If you attended a school that misled you or engaged in misconduct, there's a government program called Borrower Defense to Repayment that helps get relief from your federal student loans. The rules that explain this program were introduced in 2016, after a number of high-profile cases involving some for-profit colleges.

July 9, 2018 post:

In February 2017, Betsy DeVos was confirmed as Education Secretary. Two Republicans joined the entire Democratic caucus voting against her to force an historic tie-breaking vote from Mike Pence.  Read more at this link.  Her installation to a position of power over our education system means she spends every day implementing policies with destructive consequences for our country.

DeVos is expected to take new steps as early as this week toward reversing Obama-era protections for students in debt to for-profit schools, including those that go out of business. It’s the latest in a broader effort by DeVos to recast the mission of her department and to relax safeguards intended to protect economically vulnerable students.

DeVos is also expected to rewrite rules requiring for-profit schools to equip students with minimal employment skills to qualify for federal aid.

To reiterate what has been discussed in prior posts, rules were put in place under President Obama that forced for-profit schools to actually educate and train their students otherwise face the loss of our taxpayer funding.

For-profit colleges came under scrutiny during the Obama administration for targeting low-income and minority students who borrow heavily to pay for them, only to earn often worthless degrees. These colleges overwhelmingly rely on students who take federal student loans and who tend to have a harder time repaying them.

Betsy DeVos is destroying the Department of Education's focus on students and education in favor of corporate profits.  Truly disgusting and would be headlines daily if not for the circus, clown-show Presidency.

....carries huge significance for U.S. taxpayers, who fund the billions of dollars in student loans and grants DeVos oversees each year.

DeVos’ plans to transform her department have gone largely unheralded....  But her push to ease regulations on for-profit colleges has opened a new front in the Democratic resistance effort, sparking lawsuits from state officials.

California added another legal challenge Friday when the state sued the nation’s biggest loan company, Navient, arguing it had engaged in illegal conduct servicing federal student loans.

....DeVos.... is working to redefine a department conceived to advocate for students — not schools or lobbyists seeking financial profits.
