The Democratic House Passed the Most Significant Gun Control Measure in Over 20 Years
The 2018 Blue Wave, the largest victory by one party in a midterm election in history, is leading the Democratic Party to pass many stellar bills in the House. The two bills are focused on strengthening the federal background check system for firearms purchases, something that has very strong support nationwide regardless of party.
A Quinnipiac poll last month found 92 percent of respondents supported background checks for all buyers. The poll found strong support even when factoring in the political affiliation of poll respondents: 95 percent of Democrats, 94 percent of independents and 89 percent of Republicans were in favor of background checks.
Incredible statistics while Republican reps continue to show criminal stupidity.
But anyhow, let's look at the first bill passed by Democrats in the House:
The House passed what advocates call the most significant gun control measure in more than two decades on Wednesday [2/27/19] when it approved the first of two bills aimed at broadening the federal background check system for firearms purchases.
The vote on the first bill, dubbed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, passed largely along party lines 240 to 190 with Democrats who control the House cheering as they carried the legislation across the finish line.... modest GOP support, even attracting five Republican co-sponsors. Yet, in the end, only eight Republicans crossed party lines to support the bill.
The legislation mandates background checks be performed on all gun sales, including firearm purchases made privately, whether it be online or at gun shows. Under current law, only licensed gun dealers are required to conduct a background check for someone seeking to obtain a gun.
And the second bill was equally important:
The Democratic-led House Thursday approved another piece of legislation to broaden federal gun-control legislation. The bill gives the FBI more time to do background checks on gun purchasers. The latest bill would extend the time sellers have to wait before completing a gun sale. Like Wednesday's measure, it passed largely along party lines — 228 to 198.
The Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 expands the background check period to ten days, with the potential to be extended another ten.
Thursday's bill seeks to close the so-called "Charleston loophole" that allowed an avowed white supremacist to buy a gun used to kill 9 people at Mother Emanuel AME in Charleston. S.C., in 2015.
The Republican-controlled Senate is likely to fail in their duties to work on behalf of this country and pass them as well. SHOCKING:
Both measures face long odds at becoming law. The National Rifle Association opposes the legislation, and it faces major headwinds in the Republican-controlled Senate. In the unlikely event the Senate approves the measure, the White House has already signaled the President would veto the bills, should they reach his desk.
Of course he would. Thank you Democrats for passing measures that literally nearly everyone in the country supports.
