Budget Cuts Series 2021: Trump Cuts CDC and Global Health Funding

The Budget Cuts Series for the fiscal year 2021 continues this week.  These cuts reflect what Trump and his Republican administration want to do to our country.  Most of it will not be implemented because Democrats will block it.  But the point is it shows us exactly what Republicans would want to do if they were given unchecked power.  These cuts are so completely absurd that it’s no wonder Senate Budget Committee Republicans don’t want to hold a hearing on his budget.

As the coronavirus continues to spread, Trump’s proposed 2021 budget calls for drastic cuts to funding for the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization that critics say could prevent preparedness for a pandemic at home.

The budget request would trim funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by almost 16 percent.

,,,,budget reduces overall funding for global health, from $571 million to $532 million in 2021.... international HIV/AIDS programs... is being cut by about $58 million.

Cutting the CDC in the middle of a pandemic is not viable in a functioning republic. We do not currently have one.

The U.S. contributes ONLY 2.5% of the World Health Organization’s overall $4.8 billion budget, and Trump’s proposal calls for a $65 million cut to the group; if enacted, the U.S.’ contribution would be reduced by over 40%.

An additional 34% reduction is proposed for overall global health programs.... and a 10% overall reduction to the Department of Health and Human Services’ funding....

In any sane country, this would be political suicide.  Instead, Trump doubled down in late February.

Trump defended his huge budget cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during a Wednesday [2/26/20] press conference on the federal government's response to the coronavirus.

....the Trump administration has spent the last two years gutting critical positions and programs that health experts say weakened the federal government's ability to manage a health crisis.

In 2018, the White House eliminated a position on the National Security Council tasked with coordinating a global pandemic response.
