Budget Cuts Series: Trump Budget Ends Ban on Dumping in Lake Erie

For over two years, Smart Dissent's Budget Cuts Series has exposed Trump's proposed budget cuts, finding savage proposals hidden beneath the surface.  The Trump White House proposed their third budget in mid-March 2019 but it's been insanely hectic since then so our Series has a lot to catch up on during April and May 2019.

In today's Budget Cut Series we're sharing that Trump's 2020 budget ends a ban on dumping in Lake Erie.  Happy Earth Day!

A budget proposal that Trump unveiled....calls for ending a ban on dumping material dredged from Cleveland harbor and the Cuyahoga River into Lake Erie without approval from the state of Ohio.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has objected.... OEPA disagreed with the Army Corps assessment that the material wouldn’t pollute the lake.  Trump’s proposed federal budget for 2020 would rescind the language inserted by Ohio lawmakers.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, whom many hopes would run for President in 2020, had the following strong words:

A statement from Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown said that he....worked to "secure language last year to help keep Lake Erie clean, keep the shipping channel open for business, and ensure the Lake remains a viable resource for generations to come.... it’s shameful that the Trump administration is attempting to take aim at Lake Erie again by proposing to dump contaminated sediment into the lake.  It’s time Trump stop hurting our Great Lakes, and I will continue fighting for Ohio priorities like this throughout this budget process.”
