Pro-Gun Bills Move Forward in Congress THIS WEEK

This past June marked the one year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando that left 49 dead and the second anniversary of the chuch shooting in Charleston where nine were murdered during Bible study.  It was also back in June that House Republicans began work on something known as the "Hearing Protection Act."

You are not alone if you had no idea what this is about until now.  With this Act, House Republicans are seeking to relax restrictions on firearm silencers making it easier for shooters to shoot without being noticed.

It would have already passed back in June without any notice except it was delayed after House GOP Whip Steve Scalise and two Capitol Hill police officers were wounded by a gunman who opened fire on a congressional baseball practice session.

As we begin to come to grips with a mass shooting at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas ending 58 lives and counting with hundreds more seriously injured, House Republicans must be stopped THIS WEEK.

The House could pass legislation as early as this week that would roll back decades-old restrictions on gun silencers, opening up the market for a device that critics say would make it difficult in a mass shooting to detect where gunfire is coming from.

The silencer measure is part of the Sportsmen Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, a broad-ranging gun bill....

“What it does is it disperses the sound, so you can’t identify where the sound is coming from,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, a St. Helena Democrat and avid hunter who opposes the bill. “It puts both law enforcement and the public at risk.”

The legislation is a top priority for the National Rifle Association....

A number of city police chiefs have signed a letter of opposition.  In their letter, the police chiefs said the main market for silencers now is “military tactical teams who use silencers to confuse the sound of gunfire and confound an enemy’s response to surprise attack.”

ACTION: Although this bill currently has the numbers to pass the House, we must voice our displeasure to our Congress immediately.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, said Republicans have the votes to pass both bills..... the legislation shows the GOP in full pursuit of a pro-gun agenda despite a rise in mass shooting incidents, including one that struck their own.

Unfortunately, there is more to come.

The second major weapons legislation the House is planning to consider separately this fall would allow people to carry concealed weapons in any state if it is allowed in the state where they live.

The bill would undermine regulations in states such as California and New York that require applicants for such a permit to demonstrate a need and submit to background checks. A dozen states have no permit requirement for carrying a concealed weapon.

With concealed-carry reciprocity, “you’d have a situation where somebody could come from Arizona, where there is no permit required at all to carry a gun,” Ambler said, “and that person’s Arizona residency would override California law and allow anybody with an Arizona driver’s license or resident card to carry a loaded gun in the state.”

Meanwhile, We The People live with 1,516 mass shootings in the past 1,735 days. (see link below)
