Federal Judge Overturns Texas Voter ID Law

US District Judge Nelva Ramos granted "an injunction that bars state officials from enforcing" the recent changes to the state's 2011 voter ID law.

Despite arguments to the contrary from the Trump / Sessions Department of Justice, Judge Ramos cited the Voting Rights Act to rule...

....that the law was enacted with the deliberate intent to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton plans to appeal the decision on the basis of revisions to the law the state legislature passed over the summer.

Restricting access to voting has become one of the go-to strategies for Republicans across the country to attempt to maintain power by any means necessary. Voting ID laws such as the one in Texas have been passed in dozens of Republican run states. Judge Ramos' ruling could serve as important precedent to officially and permanently equate voter ID laws designed to decrease voting with such disgraced practices as poll taxes and literacy tests.

ACTION: Support local voter registration drives in your communities and around the country. The only way to minimize the impact of Republican voter suppression efforts is to ensure everyone able to vote gets registered and shows up to vote at every single election.
