Blue Wave Recap: Midwest Triumph for Democrats
The Blue Wave on November 6, 2018 included so much good news it was difficult to process it all. Over the next few weeks, Smart Dissent will attempt to recap the progress we made together including well-publicized topics and less covered ones.
Our second post covers the Democrats triumph in the Midwest which shows us an ideal path to 2020 victory as well.
Democrats also dominated two Senate races and the governor race in Minnesota, Great Lakes state where Trump almost pulled off an upset.

- Kansas voters elected Democrat Sharice Davids, one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress and the state’s first openly gay representative.
- Voters in the largely Republican-held state also rejected gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach, a conservative proponent of anti-illegal immigration laws and close ally to Trump.
- In Wisconsin, Republican Scott Walker lost the governor’s race to his Democratic challenger Tony Evers in a state that voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
- The Democrats not only flipped two seats in Michigan, where Trump also won in 2016, it also elected one of the first Muslim women to Congress.
With Evers winning, Dems went 7 for 8 in Senate/gov races in MI, OH, PA, Wi —all states Trump won in 2016.

As detailed by Brian Schaffner, a political scientist at Tufts University, the shift in the Democratic direction was most pronounced in the Midwest. He detailed this in an excellent visual below:
All age groups shifted in the Democratic direction in 2018, but the shift was particularly pronounced among those under 40. And the Midwest broke strongly toward Democrats in 2018. 2/3 pic.twitter.com/O7kwH4Ql0m
